The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), Ghana, on 16^th September, 2020 called on the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong. The purpose of the visit was to discuss issues pertaining to the continuous partnership between the two institutions.

During the meeting, Dr. Prince K. Osei, the President of AIMS Ghana, indicated that the Institute works in partnership with three Ghanaian Universities mainly the University of Cape Coast, University of Ghana, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, to train bright young Africans in Mathematical Sciences. AIMS Ghana, according to Dr. Osei, has trained 324 MSc students, and graduated one PhD student jointly with the University of Ghana. He expressed that within the next two to three years, AIMS will graduate 7 more PhD students. He noted that AIMS Ghana currently offers Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences, and the African Masters in Machine Intelligence (AMMI).  Dr. Osei stated that, “Through AIMS, intelligent African students are given the opportunity to meet, interact with, and learn from renounced experts in various fields within a 24-hour learning environment”.

Dr. Osei further added that AIMS Ghana has received immense support from the Ministry of Education, and would soon be launching the Msc. in Mathematical Sciences for Teachers program to build the capacity of pre-tertiary teachers in Ghana. He stated that, “We have realized that content is a major problem for most Mathematics teachers in Ghana. We want them to visualize and apply mathematical concepts in solving problems”. He also informed the VC that AIMS Ghana would be launching other programs including the Girls in Mathematical Sciences, which will be targeting intelligent female students in the senior high schools in Ghana.

The Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Boampong, commended AIMS Ghana, and noted that the University under his leadership would be introducing an integrated program in STEM Education to beef up the training needs of scientists. He said the University is keen in collaborating with AIMS Ghana’s on its STEM initiatives particularly in implementing the Msc Mathematical Sciences for Teachers.

Prof. Boampong indicated UCC’s eagerness to strengthen the partnership with AIMS Ghana to produce more scientists for Ghana, and the African continent. He stated, “Our doors are open for joint research and projects”. He pledged UCC’s support to AIMS towards training young Africans in Mathematics in the continent.

Also present in the meeting were some senior management staff of UCC including Mr. Jeff Teye Emmanuel Onyame, the Registrar; Prof Kweku Essel, the Dean of Physical Sciences; Prof. Sarah Darkwah, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies; Prof. Ernest Yankson, Head of Department of Mathematics; Major Kofi Baah-Bentum, Ag. Director of Public Affairs; and Mrs. Elizabeth Yankah Assistant Registrar, Office of the Vice-Chancellor. Ms. Rhoda Mahamah, an Administrative Manager at AIMS Ghana was also present.
