AIMS Ghana organizes the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Orientation to Inspire 35 New Scholars

On October 24, 2024, AIMS Ghana organized a dynamic orientation session for 35 selected Mastercard Foundation Scholars. Beginning at 11:00 AM, the event brought together scholars, staff, tutors, and alumni in celebration of the transformative opportunities provided by the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.

The event kicked off with a warm welcome by Dr. Rhoda J. Hawkins, Academic Director of AIMS Ghana, who highlighted the orientation’s purpose as an introduction to a journey filled with academic and personal growth. She emphasized the critical role of community and support among scholars. This was followed by a message from Dr. Prince K. Osei, Centre President of AIMS Ghana, who underscored the institute’s commitment to shaping Africa’s future leaders through rigorous academic training and mentorship. He also challenged the scholars to direct their efforts into emerging technologies especially in quantum research and its related sciences.

One of the day’s highlights was a powerful talk on “Giving Back to Society” by Prof. Aida Ouangraoua from the University of Sherbrooke, who emphasized the scholars’ responsibility to impact their communities positively, sharing stories of how past scholars have leveraged their education to drive social change. Her message resonated deeply, inspiring attendees to think about how they might contribute to their communities.

Mrs. Beauty Beatrice Kwawu, Program Manager, followed with an overview of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at AIMS. She outlined the program’s mission to provide comprehensive support to talented young Africans, focusing on academic achievement, leadership training, and psychosocial services that enable scholars to transition seamlessly from education to impactful careers.

In addition, alumni shared their perspectives, reflecting on their experiences as Mastercard Foundation Scholars at AIMS Ghana particularly offering support to communities in Biriwa and Santeo. They spoke about how the program fostered their growth as leaders and empowered them to pursue meaningful careers, providing encouragement and practical advice, resonating with the new scholars in attendance.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is Africa’s largest scholarship and leadership initiative, aiming to develop transformative young leaders across the continent. Since 2012, the program has equipped over 50,000 young Africans with the education and leadership skills necessary for sustainable careers. Through partnerships with educational institutions and NGOs, the program offers a holistic approach to education that combines academic support, leadership training, and professional development.

The orientation session concluded with a renewed sense of purpose, as the Scholars left inspired and ready to embrace their roles as future changemakers for Africa.
