The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Ghana, in partnership with Imperial College London, hosted the second edition of the Global Fellows Programme (GFP) from November 11–15, 2024, under the theme, “Synergizing Efforts for Healthy and Sustainable Cities.”
This dynamic five-day event brought together PhD students, researchers, and academic experts from AIMS, the University of Ghana, and Imperial College London to explore innovative solutions for transforming urban spaces into healthier, more sustainable environments.
The week-long activities culminated in the presentation of innovative accelerator projects addressing urban challenges, particularly geared at providing solutions for Accra, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
During the programme, Professor Hugh Brady, President of Imperial College London, visited AIMS Ghana, building on shared commitment to advancing scientific education and research in Africa. He commended AIMS’ transformative work and alumni achievements in global academia and industry, and also engaged with the Global Fellows Programme participants.
The programme concluded on the final day with a Pitch Competition, where teams elaborated on their accelerator projects to a panel of judges. The panel included Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana and Host of the National Science and Maths Quiz; Shirgade Laryea, Senior Trade Services Manager at the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce and a Master’s graduate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Imperial College Business School; and Dr. Prince Osei, Centre President of AIMS Ghana and Lead Scientist at Quantum Leap Africa.
Dr. Prince Osei and the panel, applauded the winning team who proposed a solution to prevent wastage of overly ripe fruits and vegetables, addressing the problems associated with disposal of waste food. Their solution also contributes to the reduction of methane emissions responsible for around 30% of the rise in global temperatures since the industrial revolution.
Programme organizing committee lead at AIMS Ghana, Dr. Angela Tabiri stated that the week’s activities underscored the importance of holistic approaches to urban development, highlighting the role of innovation, interdisciplinary research, and international cooperation in addressing pressing global issues. Beyond the immediate outcomes of the accelerator projects, participants enhanced their abilities to work collaboratively in intercultural teams, network effectively, and propose practical solutions with real-world applications.
The Annual Global Fellows Programme is aimed at strengthening the ties between AIMS and Imperial College, reaffirming the commitment of these institutions to empowering the next generation of STEM leaders in Africa and beyond.
