Cape Coast, Ghana – March 14, 2025 – The Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with AIMS Ghana, Practical Education Network (PEN) and IOT Network Hub, commemorated the International Day of Mathematics (IDM 2025) with a grand national event at Adisadel College Assembly Hall in Cape Coast. Themed “Mathematics, Art, and Creativity,” by UNESCO, the celebration highlighted the intersection of mathematics with artistic and creative expression.

The program commenced with a project exhibition where students and educators showcased innovative mathematical projects through hands-on demonstrations. Over 25 Primary, Junior and Senior high schools including St. Nicholas Anglican JHS, University Junior High School, St. Mary’s Anglican Basic School, Holy Child School, Wesley Girls School, Mfantsipim School, St. Augustine’s College among others, participated in displaying intricate designs of art which reflected the application of mathematics in art, technology and design.

The formal session began with an opening led by a representative from the Regional Education Office. Mad. Victoria Ansah from the Science Education Unit (SEU) of GES introduced the chairperson, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, Director General of GES, who delivered brief remarks emphasizing the role of mathematics in fostering creativity and innovation in education.

In his welcome address, Mr. Emmanuel Essuman, Regional Director of Education for the Central Region, expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts of AIMS Ghana and other partners in promoting STEM education. Mrs. Olivia Serwaa Opare, Director of the Science Education Unit at the National STEM Resource Center, elaborated on the purpose of the gathering, underscoring the significance of engaging students in mathematics beyond traditional learning methods.

Partnering institutions delivered various solidarity messages to mark the day’s celebration with Mr. John Appiah, Senior Communications Manager, reaffirming AIMS Ghana’s commitment to advancing STEM education in Ghana. The event’s interactive segments commenced with a spirited quiz competition conducted by Dr. Angela Tabiri from AIMS Ghana, challenging students on various mathematical concepts.

Following the competition, Ms. Rhoda N. Safowa, External Relations and Public Engagement Manager introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Angela Tabiri, Academic Manager and Research Associate at AIMS Ghana whose speech focused on the transformative power of mathematics in artistic and creative disciplines. Through practical examples, she provoked thoughts for students to explore interdisciplinary approaches of mathematics in their studies.

Awards were presented subsequently to outstanding participants and the event continued with an address by Prof. Davis delivering a call to action, where he summarized the key takeaways and encouraged students to embrace mathematics with curiosity and creativity.

With over 500 students in attendance, the event underscored the importance of integrating mathematics with art and creativity, fostering an engaging and dynamic learning environment for the next generation of STEM leaders in Ghana.
