In collaboration with the African Maths Initiative (AMI) and Ghana Innovations in Development, Education and the Mathematical Sciences (GHAIDEMS), led by AIMS Ghana Alumnus ’13 – Dr. Francis Torgbor, the Centre hosted the annual Allotey Maths Camp, from July 29th to August 10th, 2024. This program brought together 53 Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) students from various regions in Ghana. This week-long camp provided an inspiring platform for young minds to dive into the world of mathematics, igniting their curiosity and encouraging them to explore the limitless possibilities of STEM.
Guided by a team of 20 passionate volunteers from around the globe, the students participated in engaging learning sessions that challenged their thinking and sharpened their problem-solving skills. The camp featured mind-bending activities such as Cryptarithmetic, Geogebra, and programming puzzles, blending fun with intellectual growth. In addition to these challenges, students attended inspiring workshops designed to broaden their understanding of mathematics and its real-world applications.
Beyond the mathematical exercises, this year’s camp held special significance as it took place during the birthday week of the legendary Professor Francis K. A. Allotey, whose contributions to the field of STEM continue to shape future generations. On August 9th, participants celebrated his remarkable legacy, reflecting on his brilliance, pioneering spirit, and dedication to advancing science in Africa.
The 2024 Allotey Maths Camp ended on a high note, with students departing not only with new mathematical insights but also with a deeper appreciation for STEM and a shared sense of purpose to follow in the footsteps of icons like Prof. Allotey.
