Highlighting Ghana’s growing leadership in science and education, AIMS Ghana played an active role at the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with Senior Communications Manager Mr. John Appiah joining the national delegation from 30th October to 13th November 2025.
The conference brought together global leaders, policymakers, and institutions to deliberate on strengthening education systems, promoting scientific cooperation and advancing UNESCO’s mission for peace and progress.
Government officials including; Her Excellency Meredith Lamptey Addy – Ghana’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Dr. Osman Damba, Secretary General, Dr. Naazia Ibrahim Deputy Secretary-General (Operations) as well as Mr. Apollonius Asare, Chief Programme Officer for the Natural Science Unit all from the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, were in attendance. The delegation emphasized Ghana’s commitment to scaling science education and research, particularly through initiatives that empower young people with critical skills for the future.



AIMS Ghana played a key role in the discussions, showcasing its impactful contributions to capacity building across Africa. As part of the continent-wide AIMS network, the AIMS Ghana Centre has trained over 700 postgraduate students in mathematical sciences, 70% of whom now serve as researchers, innovators, educators and policy influencers. Through its structured programs, including the Master’s in Mathematical Sciences and the African Master’s in Machine Intelligence (AMMI), AIMS continues to build a robust pipeline of STEM leaders equipped to address challenges in climate change, health, finance, artificial intelligence and industry.
Beyond academic training, AIMS Ghana’s hosts public engagement programs, mentorship for high-school girls, teacher training initiatives and collaborations with organizations such as UNESCO which strengthens scientific literacy and expands access to innovative teaching resources. These efforts contribute directly to national and regional development priorities, reinforcing the value of science education in driving socioeconomic transformation.
AIMS Ghana’s participation in the UNESCO General Conference further affirmed its dedication to shaping Africa’s future through excellence in science, leadership and partnerships that uplift communities across the continent.
