Thinking in Numbers, Acting for Change – Emmanuel Junior Awortwe

Emmanuel Junior Awortwe’s journey into mathematics began with curiosity and grew into a mission to solve real problems that matter.

Growing up in Ghana, Emmanuel’s first encounters with mathematics came through friendly but challenging moments with his father, who would throw quick mental arithmetic questions; fondly called “Mentals” at him and his sister. What began as simple exercises soon became a game of speed, logic and curiosity. With constant encouragement from teachers who saw his potential, Emmanuel discovered the joy of problem-solving and the beauty of finding connections hidden within numbers.

That curiosity carried him to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he proudly earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. Rather than stopping there, Emmanuel went on to work as a Teaching and Research Assistant, supporting coursework and engaging in research that deepened his appreciation for applied mathematics. This experience confirmed what he already felt mathematics was, not just something to study, but a powerful tool to understand and improve the world.

At the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Ghana, Emmanuel’s journey took a transformative turn. He describes the environment as dynamic, intense and inspiring; a place that pushes students to think creatively and work collaboratively.

“One standout moment was a Mathematical Problem-Solving class where a lecturer transformed a real-world issue into a team challenge. As we brainstormed, debated and tested ideas together, I saw mathematics come alive not as abstract theory, but as a practical, engaging force for change” He shared.

Beyond the classroom, Emmanuel treasures the diverse AIMS Ghana community. Surrounded by peers from across Africa, he has learned the value of shared perspectives, late-night discussions, group projects and teamwork. These moments have shaped him not only as a mathematician, but as a thinker, someone who approaches challenges with curiosity, structure and resilience.

“Looking ahead, I aspire to build a career in Data Science, developing models that tackle pressing global and local challenges. One cause especially close to my heart is the fight against illegal mining and its devastating environmental impact in Ghana. Equipped with the skills and mindset gained at AIMS Ghana, I am determined to use mathematics as a force for sustainability, policy and positive change.”

Emmanuel’s story reminds us that mathematics is not just learned, it is lived, challenged and ultimately used to transform society.
