AIMS Ghana Mastercard Foundation Scholars Strengthen Leadership Capacity Through High-Level Training Session

On Thursday, 19th February 2026, Mastercard Foundation Scholars at African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Ghana participated in a transformative leadership training session under the theme, “Transforming Africa: The Role of Ethical Leadership in Driving Research, Entrepreneurship and Industry.”

The session formed part of the Institute’s ongoing internal capacity-building initiatives aimed at equipping Scholars with the values, skills and mindset necessary to lead responsibly across diverse sectors.

The training brought together distinguished resource persons, including Fidelia Dake, Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, and Johnson Opoku-Boateng, CEO of QA Consult Africa. Drawing from their extensive academic and industry experience, they engaged Scholars in dynamic discussions on the principles of ethical leadership and its critical role in shaping Africa’s research landscape, entrepreneurial ecosystem and industrial growth.

Throughout the session, Scholars explored what it means to lead with integrity in complex environments. Conversations emphasized accountability, innovation with purpose, and the responsibility of emerging leaders to align research and enterprise with societal needs. Participants were challenged to think beyond personal achievement and consider how their work could contribute meaningfully to Africa’s development agenda.

The interactive format encouraged reflection and dialogue, enabling Scholars to connect ethical decision-making with practical leadership scenarios in academia, start-ups, and corporate environments. By bridging theory with real-world insights, the training reinforced the importance of character, resilience and strategic thinking in driving sustainable impact.

The session underscored the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme’s commitment to developing not only academically accomplished graduates but principled leaders capable of transforming their communities. As Africa continues to navigate rapid economic and technological shifts, the need for ethical, visionary leadership remains paramount.

Special appreciation goes to our speakers with support from the Scholars Program Manager, Mrs. Beauty Beatrice Kwawu and facilitators including Joel Bamfo-Appiah and Dr. Abdulmajid Osumanu.

Through this enriching engagement, Scholars deepened their understanding of leadership as service, anchored in integrity and action and strengthened their readiness to contribute to research, entrepreneurship and industry across the continent.
