The government of Ghana declared 11th June 2021 as National Tree Planting Campaign under the Green Ghana Project. As part of efforts to preserve the country’s forest cover, the Ghana Forestry Commission provided five million seedlings to communities across the country for the day’s activity.

With Climate Change Science as a Research impact area, AIMS Ghana engaged in this exercise in order to contribute to Climate Action, thus supporting the agenda of sustainability, complementing academic research in providing solutions to climate-related problems. Thirty AIMS Ghana MSc. Students participated in this event at the Santoe KKMA Basic School with females making up 44% of this number. Some staff and tutors from AIMS, led by Mr. Johnson Singir; Program Officer, joined this exercise as well as dignitaries from Kpone-Katamanso Constituency. Among the dignitaries were Hon. Joseph Tettey (Member of Parliament for Kpone- Katamanso), Hon. Samuel Abbrey (Assemblyman, Santoe), Mr. Chris Elorm, Mr. Joseph Osei and Mr. Dawud Mustpha Adjei; Agricultural Officer at Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly. The Headmistress of the school; Ms. Patience Kwaakuyi and a teacher were elated about the choice of the school as a beneficiary for the tree planting exercise. This brought the total number of participants to about 45 people.

The activity began at 10:00 am with Hon. Tettey giving a short address explaining the need to engage in the tree planting exercise to sustain the environment for future generations. Under the supervision of the Agric Officer, the member of Parliament for Kpone-Katamanso, Mr. Tettey, planted the first tree at the boundary of the school land. AIMS
Ghana students and other community members planted over 40 seedlings on the school compound. The plant varieties included coconut, orange, teak, Indian almond, Gliricidia, and others which were donated to AIMS Ghana by the Ghana Forestry Commission. The authorities of the school used the exercise to secure the territories of the school
land by planting on the boundaries to ward off intruders. The seedlings were evenly distributed across the campus with both the Primary and Junior High School pupils having a fair share of the seedlings.

The program came to a close at 12 noon with Hon. Tettey appreciating AIMS Ghana’s commitment to participating in the national activity, indicating that there would be future collaborations with AIMS Ghana in promoting studies in mathematics in the constituency.
