In the last 19 years, the AIMS Global Network has been responsible for contributing to Africa’s development, birthing over 2500 talents and impacting over 10,000 others through unique programs and initiatives on the continent. AIMS across all its 5 Centres (South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon and Rwanda), has been committed to Africa’s transformation through innovative scientific training and research by affording brilliant young Africans, opportunities to innovate and provide solutions to various challenges.

This year AIMS Ghana celebrates its 10^th anniversary – having graduated over 400 young Africans from across the continent in the last decade, the Centre has made a significant contribution towards the creation of a critical mass of exceptional Africans. At its 10^th graduation ceremony, on 25^th June 2022, the Centre makes history having graduated 100 students with Master’s degrees in various fields within the Mathematical Sciences, who are dedicated to providing homegrown solutions to continental challenges. The end goal is to bring up an African generation that can lead in future scientific discoveries and technological advancements as the world plunges deeper into the 4^th industrial revolution.

The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, graced the occasion of AIMS Ghana’s 10th graduation ceremony and stated that the government of Ghana through the Ministry of Education, would in a few weeks cut the sod for the construction of a girls’ STEM Senior High School (SHS).

“I am excited to inform you that we have awarded the contract for the construction of a girls’ STEM SHS, in partnership with AIMS,” he said.

He explained that the school would provide a more structured environment for female SHS students who were undertaking a nine-month STEM programme launched in November 2020 by AIMS Ghana ie. the Girls in Mathematical Sciences Program (GMSP). The programme was part of the implementation of the UNESCO Category II Agreement with the government aimed at mentoring beneficiaries to pursue STEM careers at the highest level, he said.

Dr. Adutwum noted that the government would also start the construction of 35 STEM SHSs across the country, 10 of which would begin this year. “A STEM SHS has also been completed at Abomosu in the Eastern Region. Also, existing senior high schools are being retooled,” he added. He indicated that the country was preparing to become the hub of education in Africa, adding that the government was determined not to lose focus on improving education, despite the global economic crisis.

He commended AIMS for its work in training mathematicians and scientists in Africa while encouraging the graduates to put into practice what they had acquired during their programme, finding more innovative ways to readily and efficiently use their skills.

The Centre President of AIMS Ghana, Dr Prince Osei, expressed the Institute’s commitment to contributing to Africa’s transformation through innovative scientific training and research. He also charged the graduates to put their knowledge, problem-solving skills and training to use to lead Africa’s growth, while contributing to shaping the world at large.

Ms. Kathleen Csaba, the Canadian High Commissioner,  in a brief remark, encouraged the graduates to use the expertise received as a force to make a positive impact wherever they find themselves while expressing Canada’s commitment to promoting and supporting a growing number of women and girls in STEM.

A total of 100 students were awarded a Master’s in the Mathematical Sciences, 43 of whom were Teachers Master’s in Mathematical Sciences for Teachers (MMST). The affiliating partner universities include the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the University of Cape Coast, the University of Ghana and the University of Energy and Natural Resources.

The valedictorians for the Regular Master’s and the Master’s in Mathematical Sciences for Teachers (MMST) were Mr. Emmanuel Haizel and Ms. Abigail Amankwah respectively. Additionally, a total of seven students were honoured with the Francis Kofi Ampenyin – FKA Allotey Meritorious Award for excelling and receiving distinction in their programmes of study.
