AIMS Master of Mathematical Sciences for Teachers (MMST)
Overview
The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Ghana offers a two-year Master’s of Mathematical Sciences for Teachers program which began in November, 2020. This is a special class training for teachers of mathematics in Ghana. It provides a great opportunity for mathematics teachers, as it is on a part-time basis and with a hybrid learning curricula.
The program is part of AIMS Ghana’s postgraduate training modules designed to equip mathematics teachers at the secondary level with 21st century mathematical skills towards improved content and methodology in teaching mathematics at second cycle institutions. It also aims to expand the knowledge of teachers and ensure an in-depth understanding of mathematical foundations relating to core secondary school curricula, and applications of modern mathematics.
Our Approach
The MMST modules are learner-centred and gender-responsive to address the quality of teaching at the secondary level and also to equip teachers with the requisite skills to understand and address specific learning needs of female and male learners at the secondary level. The program is delivered in a hybrid mode (30% residential and 70% online), giving teachers the opportunity to practice what they learn while in school and also adjust to the new normal of learning, ‘computer-based online teaching and learning’. AIMS MMST focuses on mathematics and its applications, and challenges learners to be creative and innovative in teaching mathematics to whip up young learners’ interest in mathematics and science and also build human capital for Ghana and Africa’s socio-economic development.
The program is structured into three phases: Skills, Review and Essay.
The skills courses are compulsory and they are designed to provide introductory and foundational materials to students and also train students in problem solving using a wide range of mathematical and computing methods.
By the end of this esteemed program, learners would have a deeper understanding of the mathematics underlying the content taught in the classroom. AIMS MMST is equivalent to 4 semester hybrid courses including a project based research.
The Curriculum
The courses include Mathematical Problem Solving, Physical Problem Solving, History of Mathematics and Mathematical Discoveries, Technology in Mathematics, Introduction to Probability Theory, Communicating Mathematics, Calculus, Introduction to Python and SciPy, Algebra for Teachers, Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations.
