Programs and Events
Beyond building top-tier facilities for learning and innovation, InnovAIMS curates programs and events that challenge minds, foster meaningful connections, and drive real-world problem-solving, all while nurturing a welcoming and growth-oriented atmosphere. These events include:
- Hackathons
These are short-term, high-intensity challenges where teams work to solve real-world problems in areas such as AI, healthcare, fintech, agriculture, and climate science. Typically running from 48 hours to one week, these events bring together students, researchers, and early-stage entrepreneurs to form teams, receive mentorship, and develop functional prototypes. Each hackathon concludes with a pitch session, where top teams compete for prizes, incubation opportunities, and valuable industry connections.
- Social Innovation Prize
An annual competition that celebrates innovative projects creating social and economic impact in African communities. Over a three-month period, finalists receive training in impact assessment, business development, and storytelling—culminating in a grand showcase where winners secure grants, media exposure, and strategic industry partnerships. The competition is open to AIMS students and alumni, as well as external social entrepreneurs.
- GreenTech & AgriTech Accelerator
A three-to-six-month incubation program supporting startups focused on sustainability, agriculture, and renewable energy. Selected teams receive technical mentorship, access to prototyping facilities, and investor pitch preparation. The program concludes with a demo day where participants present to funders and potential partners. This accelerator is open to early-stage startups, students, and research teams working on sustainability solutions.
- Innovation Exchange Program
A cross-border initiative that connects AIMS Ghana with the wider AIMS network and global innovation partners, facilitating joint research, startup collaborations, and international networking. Participants engage in workshops, virtual meetups, and short-term research visits, leading to co-developed projects and expanded access to new markets. This is open to students, alumni, and researchers.
- Reverse Innovation Bootcamp
A unique six-week program exploring how African-born innovations, such as mobile banking, low-cost healthcare, and sustainable energy solutions, can be adapted for high-income markets. The bootcamp includes case studies, expert panels, and hands-on design sprints, helping innovators refine their ideas and secure global partnerships. It is open to entrepreneurs, researchers, and industry professionals.
- Hackathon Marathons
These are month-long hackathons designed to push the boundaries of innovation, with weekly challenges centered around transformative themes such as “Tech for Good” and “The Future of Farming.” Outstanding solutions earn exciting rewards—including tech gadgets, cash prizes, and exclusive features across AIMS Ghana’s media platforms.
- Pitch & Pizza Nights
Monthly informal pitching sessions where innovators share early-stage ideas in a relaxed, supportive environment. Each session may include feedback from industry experts, networking opportunities, and the chance to win micro-grants for promising concepts. Open to anyone with an innovative idea, from students and researchers to early-stage startups.
- Innovation Olympics
Fun innovation games like “Fastest Prototype,” “Greenest Idea,” and “Most Social Impact.” Also includes coding hackathons, research challenges, and startup pitch battles.
Driving Change through Science and Innovation
InnovAIMS is more than a lab — it’s a launchpad. Our mission is to create interdisciplinary solutions to Africa’s toughest problems, from climate resilience to digital inclusion, through the power of STEM and human-centered design.
Areas of Focus
At InnovAIMS, we are committed to empowering Africa’s next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs. Each of our focus areas plays a critical role in building a thriving innovation ecosystem that supports idea development, product creation, and business growth. Here’s how each component contributes to our mission and why it’s essential to our hub’s success:
Research and Development (R&D)
Innovative solutions begin with curiosity and inquiry. At InnovAIMS, R&D serves as the foundation for ideation, experimentation, and evidence-based innovation. We support academic and applied research that drives breakthrough technologies, product development, and data-driven decision-making. Our focus on R&D bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, ensuring that innovations emerging from the hub are grounded in science, rigor, and relevance.
Entrepreneurship and Business Incubation
Ideas only reach their full potential when nurtured into sustainable ventures. InnovAIMS offers structured incubation programs to guide early-stage entrepreneurs through business development, market validation, and growth planning. Through expert mentorship, business modeling support, and strategic guidance, we help transform research and innovative concepts into scalable, investor-ready startups that can compete locally and globally.
Digital Skills Training
In today’s world, digital literacy is no longer optional, it’s essential. InnovAIMS provides hands-on digital skills training to equip young Africans with the technical know-how required for today’s job market and entrepreneurial landscape. From software development and data science to cybersecurity and digital marketing, our training programs are designed to make participants industry-ready and globally competitive.
Makerspace and Hardware
Prototyping and physical product development are crucial for engineering and tech-based startups. Our fully-equipped makerspace and hardware lab provide innovators with access to tools, equipment, and space to design, build, and test tangible solutions. Whether it’s 3D printing, electronics, robotics, or IoT devices, the makerspace fosters hands-on innovation and accelerates the journey from concept to prototype.
Co-working Space
Collaboration is at the heart of innovation. Our modern co-working space offers a conducive environment for individuals and teams to work, collaborate, and network. Designed to foster creativity and cross-disciplinary interaction, the space brings together researchers, startups, mentors, and ecosystem enablers, sparking new ideas, partnerships, and opportunities for growth.
Start-up Funding and Investments
Access to capital is a major barrier for startups. InnovAIMS bridges this gap by connecting promising ventures with funding opportunities, from seed funding and grants to investor networks. We also support startups with pitch preparation, financial planning, and investor engagement strategies to increase their chances of securing sustainable funding for growth and scaling.
