Meet Tariq Rwecungura, a driven and curious mind from Uganda whose journey through mathematics is as inspiring as it is impactful. Currently a student at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Ghana, Tariq’s story is one of passion, perseverance and purpose.
Prior to his course at AIMS Ghana, Tariq was already sharing his love for mathematics as a high school teacher. He found joy not only in solving problems but in explaining concepts clearly and engaging in meaningful discussions with his students and peers. Mathematics came naturally to him, even when other subjects posed challenges, yet he excelled across the sciences, earning top marks in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. At one point, he found himself at a crossroads between pursuing medicine or mathematics. Ultimately, his passion for maths prevailed, shaped and strengthened by the influence of inspiring mentors like Dr. Odumba Hassan, a specialist in Biomathematics, and Dr. Odamulira Mahal, an expert in Diophantine Equations.
At AIMS Ghana, Tariq has embraced a dynamic and fast-paced learning environment that continues to stretch and refine his abilities. Immersed in a vibrant, pan-African community of scholars, he has not only deepened his mathematical knowledge but also gained valuable technical skills, including programming in Python. Additionally, as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar, participating in various outreach activities, the collaborative spirit of AIMS has allowed him to learn diverse perspectives while building lasting connections across the continent.
One of the most memorable moments in his academic journey so far has been his experience with the Physical Problem-Solving course, particularly the introduction to Quantum Mechanics. Challenging yet fascinating, the course pushed Tariq beyond his comfort zone. He recalls with a smile how the lecturer reassured the class, saying, “This is Master’s… you’ll be fine,” capturing both the intensity and excitement of the experience.
Looking ahead, Tariq envisions a future where mathematics and technology intersect to create meaningful change. He plans to pursue a doctorate in Artificial Intelligence, with the goal of leveraging data analysis and computational tools to tackle real-world challenges in his community.
